Protests and Public Actions

Since 2024, activists, human rights organisations, and solidarity networks in Bulgaria and across Europe have organised public protests, petition drives, and solidarity actions calling for the immediate release of Abdulrahman Al-Khalidi. These are some of the recorded moments.

Context

Why People Took to the Streets

The protests that began in 2024 were a direct response to a series of Bulgarian institutional decisions that defied court orders and international human rights law. When the Sofia Administrative Court ordered Abdulrahman Al-Khalidi's immediate release on 18 January 2024, Bulgarian state agencies refused to comply. The State Agency for National Security issued a new order within days, keeping him detained.

On 5 July 2024, Al-Khalidi announced a hunger strike in protest. The strike drew widespread media attention in Bulgaria and internationally. Solidarity protests were organised outside the Busmantsi detention centre in Sofia.

On 26 March 2025, a second court release order was issued. He was again not released and was instead transferred to the Migration Directorate section of Busmantsi. A fresh solidarity action was held on 1 April 2025.
